If you are turning 65 in the next 12 months, this checklist tells you exactly what to do and when. Medicare enrollment has strict deadlines, and doing things in the right order makes a significant difference to both your coverage and your costs.
3 months before you turn 65
- Confirm whether you are automatically enrolled in Medicare or need to sign up (you are auto-enrolled if you already receive Social Security benefits; otherwise you must apply)
- Apply for Medicare Part A and Part B if you are not auto-enrolled -- do this online at ssa.gov or by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213
- Call 65Plus Health Assist free to compare Medicare Advantage plans available in your zip code -- this takes about 10 minutes and costs nothing
- Check whether your current doctors are in-network on plans you are considering
- Have a list of your prescriptions ready so an agent can check drug coverage on each plan
Your birthday month
- If you enrolled in Medicare Part A and B in the 3 months before your birthday month, your Medicare coverage starts on the first day of your birthday month
- Confirm your Medicare Advantage plan enrollment (if chosen) is active -- you should receive a plan member card
- Set up your Medicare account at mymedicare.gov to track your coverage and claims
Within the first month of Medicare coverage
- Schedule your Welcome to Medicare preventive visit -- this is a free one-time exam covered in your first 12 months on Part B
- Confirm your prescription drug coverage is working by checking your first prescription fill
- Review your Medicare plan's Evidence of Coverage document to understand your copays and benefits
- If you are still working and have employer coverage, confirm how it coordinates with Medicare
What if you missed your enrollment window?
If your birthday month has passed and you did not enroll in Medicare Part B, you may face a late enrollment penalty -- a permanent increase in your Part B premium. However, options remain depending on your situation. If you have or had employer coverage, a Special Enrollment Period may still be available. Call us free and we will assess your situation and tell you exactly what options you have.
